The Citadel of Besançon, designed by Vauban and a masterpiece of the XVII century, is the premier tourist destination of the Franche-Comté. This magnificently restored fortress houses several museums as well as a large number of animal enclosures.

Since July 2008, The citadel of Besançon is classified as part of the UNESCO world heritage list.
